There is typically an extra dose of cynicism when it comes to reviewing actors' attempts at solo albums. And that's because much of the music released is the result of pure opportunity rather than hard work. (Would Scarlett Johansson have received the green light by any record label to release a Tom Waits covers album if she were not a Hollywood A-lister?)
At least when it comes to Jeff Bridges, the man does have some musical form. His eponymous second album follows his 2000 debut, Be Here Soon, which was released after his critically acclaimed role in The Big Lebowski. This time around, fresh from his Oscar success as Otis "Bad" Blake in Crazy Heart, Bridges delivers a rootsy 12 song set, minus the movie character's inner demons.
Carefully produced by T Bone Burnett, the songs here shuffle along quietly as Bridges's lived-in voice spreads over lost love and opportunities. Maybe I Missed the Point is a heartfelt gem due to its direct lyrics (by songwriter John Goodwin), while the rolling Nothing Yet benefits from inventive arrangements. But while the whole affair sounds relaxed and pleasant, the relentlessly low-key productions by Burnett makes you miss some of the grit Bridges injected into his musical performances in Crazy Heart.

Moment of the day Pakistan’s effort in the field had hints of shambles about it. The wheels were officially off when Wahab Riaz lost his run up and aborted the delivery four times in a row. He re-measured his run, jogged in for two practice goes. Then, when he was finally ready to go, he bailed out again. It was a total cringefest.
Stat of the day – 139.5 Yasir Shah has bowled 139.5 overs in three innings so far in this Test series. Judged by his returns, the workload has not withered him. He has 14 wickets so far, and became history’s first spinner to take five-wickets in an innings in five consecutive Tests. Not bad for someone whose fitness was in question before the series.
The verdict Stranger things have happened, but it is going to take something extraordinary for Pakistan to keep their undefeated record in Test series in the UAE in tact from this position. At least Shan Masood and Sami Aslam have made a positive start to the salvage effort.
