The Eurovision Song Contest has come to Baku. It's difficult not to escape it, with the name of perhaps the world's kitch-iest song competition plastered on almost every available bit of space across the Azerbaijan capital. The excitement in the city is as palpable as if were hosting the Olympics and the World Cup combined. Well, most of the population are excited about its hosting of tonight's finals, which see 26 countries going for 'glory'. This year's competition has seen its fair share of controversy, with human rights groups getting involved regarding Azerbaijan's freedom of speech issues (which shouldn't concern the, most ridiculous, Eurovision song lyrics). Then there's Iran, were several clerics have said Azerbaijan, a Muslim country, shouldn't be hosting it. Armenia pulled out of the competition out of security fears. This is a competition where a song called Boom Bang-a-Bang won in 1969 and this year features Engelbert Humperdinck (below) as the UK's entry. Whatever the issues, its seems much of the dissent has been cleared from the streets, which have been thronging with international fans of the competition being held in the brand new Baku Crystal Hall by the Caspian Sea. The competition starts at 11pm UAE time. Humperdinck is on first (which many think is a bad sign for the 73-year-old crooner - first on, last to be remembered). I'll be trying to update this blog as much as possible as the night goes on. Will the favourite, Sweden take the prize or will it go to the bizarre singing Russian grannies? Or will it return to Azerbaijan, whose singer just happens to be the president's son in law... Keep clicking here to find out.
