The World Energy Congress 2022 will be held in St Petersburg, Russia, under the theme ‘Energy for Humanity’, it was announced on the closing day of the World Energy Week 2020 on Friday.
The 25th Congress of the World Energy Council will be jointly organised by the World Energy Council and the Roscongress Foundation.
“We often forget that essentially energy is a story about humanity. Human development has always been linked to energy transition: from fire, to hydrocarbons and on to cleaner alternatives, like renewables, it’s always been about peoples’ lives and society’s evolution. Energy has propelled society forward for thousands of years,” said Angela Wilkinson, secretary general and chief executive, World Energy Council.
This year, World Energy Week, a digital-only event, was held from October 7 to 9 under the theme ‘Connecting Energy Societies’.
The 24th edition of the World Energy Congress held in Abu Dhabi last year discussed the role of the energy industry in tackling climate change and creating a more inclusive society.
“Russia, one of the largest global energy suppliers, supports the development vector for clean technology in line with the Paris Agreement and in the framework of Opec+ member country meetings,” said Alexander Novak, Russian Energy Minister. “At the same time, as a responsible manufacturer and exporter, we are also interested in creating the right conditions to support the market for quality and accessible energy.”
The Congress, from October 24 to 27 in 2022, will be preceded by two years of ‘Road to Congress’ virtual events to explore the theme of ‘Energy for Humanity’.
The World Energy Congress is a triennial event organised by the London-based World Energy Council. It took place for the first time in 1924 in London.
