Etihad Airways has quashed speculation that it is to become the new sponsor of Italian football club Inter Milan.
According to reports in Italy, the Abu Dhabi carrier was set to sign a deal worth €125 million (Dh520m) over five years with the Serie A side, whose current deal with the tyre company Pirelli expires at the end of the season.
However, Etihad said that this was not the case.
“Etihad Airways denies the reports and speculation that the airline is to become a sponsor of Inter Milan football club in Italy,” an Etihad Airways spokesperson said. “The airline is not in talks with the club and there is no truth to these rumours.”
Inter is one of the most successful clubs in Italian football history, with 18 Serie A titles, seven Coppa Italias, five Italian Super Cups, three Uefa Cups, and three Uefa Champions League titles. It stands third in the Serie A table this season, but missed out on a Champions League place - and qualification for any European competition - after finishing a disappointing eighth last season.
Etihad currently sponsors the English Premier League leaders Manchester City, as well as Melbourne FC of the Australian A League and Major League Soccer’s New York City FC.
The UAE already has a presence in Italian football, with Emirates having sponsored Inter’s rivals AC Milan since 2007. The Dubai airline last year renewed the deal for a further five seasons for a reported €85m.
Research from the consultancy Repucom earlier this year showed that 20 of Europe’s top clubs are sponsored in some way by Arabian Gulf airlines.
Etihad last year completed a deal to acquire a 49 per cent stake in the struggling Italian carrier Alitalia.

Going grey? A stylist's advice
If you’re going to go grey, a great style, well-cared for hair (in a sleek, classy style, like a bob), and a young spirit and attitude go a long way, says Maria Dowling, founder of the Maria Dowling Salon in Dubai.
It’s easier to go grey from a lighter colour, so you may want to do that first. And this is the time to try a shorter style, she advises. Then a stylist can introduce highlights, start lightening up the roots, and let it fade out. Once it’s entirely grey, a purple shampoo will prevent yellowing.
“Get professional help – there’s no other way to go around it,” she says. “And don’t just let it grow out because that looks really bad. Put effort into it: properly condition, straighten, get regular trims, make sure it’s glossy.”

Day 4, Dubai Test: At a glance
Moment of the day Lahiru Gamage appeared to have been hard done by when he had his dismissal of Sami Aslam chalked off for a no-ball. Replays suggested he had not overstepped. No matter. Two balls later, the exact same combination – Gamage the bowler and Kusal Mendis at second slip – combined again to send Aslam back.
Stat of the day Haris Sohail took three wickets for one run in the only over he bowled, to end the Sri Lanka second innings in a hurry. That was as many as he had managed in total in his 10-year, 58-match first-class career to date. It was also the first time a bowler had taken three wickets having bowled just one over in an innings in Tests.
The verdict Just 119 more and with five wickets remaining seems like a perfectly attainable target for Pakistan. Factor in the fact the pitch is worn, is turning prodigiously, and that Sri Lanka’s seam bowlers have also been finding the strip to their liking, it is apparent the task is still a tough one. Still, though, thanks to Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed, it is possible.
The BIO
Favourite piece of music: Verdi’s Requiem. It’s awe-inspiring.
Biggest inspiration: My father, as I grew up in a house where music was constantly played on a wind-up gramophone. I had amazing music teachers in primary and secondary school who inspired me to take my music further. They encouraged me to take up music as a profession and I follow in their footsteps, encouraging others to do the same.
Favourite book: Ian McEwan’s Atonement – the ending alone knocked me for six.
Favourite holiday destination: Italy - music and opera is so much part of the life there. I love it.
