Upgrade to UAQ beaches will boost tourism

Umm Al Quwain // Beaches are being upgraded in the northern emirate in an attempt to boost tourism and meet international standards.

Work on a Dh200 million, 4.5 metre pathway on the corniche, which began in September last year, has just been completed.

The director of the Public Works directorate, Misabah Humaid, said: “The pathway will enable beachgoers to enjoy their slow walks on the corniche with no hassles from vehicles.”

Other upgrading projects taking place on Al Haditha beach, located between the Ruler’s palace and the fisherman’s port, include a children’s play area and benches on the sides of the beach as well as umbrellas for the beachgoers comfort, he said.

A car park for 80 vehicles is also being built along with outlets selling food and drink.

Work is expected to be completed next year with officials already forecasting that it will boost the emirate’s image.

Mr Humaid also said dustbins would be available to prevent littering. Signposts stationed on the beach warn of legal action and fines against offenders.

In spite of it being old, the beach is very popular, with many people referring to it as “the new beach” because of new facilities.

“I was in the UAQ two years back and this time finding new infrastructures like this beach is amazing,” said an Indian tourist, Hassan Banday.

“If more beaches are upgraded like this one, the UAQ would be a big tourist hub especially for the tourists like me who enjoy a quiet environment.”

Despite boasting some of the best beaches in the country, UAQ has always been hampered by not providing enough facilities, such as public toilets, emergency services and entertainment areas for children.

“If you want to use the toilets you have to go inside the nearest mosque,” said Rashid, a visitor to the beach. “If you are not a Muslim then you have to go back to your home or hotel to use a toilet.”
