For those who suffer from motion sickness, what would otherwise be a simple car journey can turn into a nauseating ordeal – but there is hope on the horizon thanks to British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover, which is developing technology that it says will drastically reduce motion sickness. More than 70 per cent of people are affected by motion sickness, JLR says, a problem that will be tackled by cars that will be able to tell if you are going to be unwell before you even know yourself and adjust the vehicle's settings accordingly to alleviate the symptoms by at least 60 per cent. Using biometric sensors that record physiological signals, the vehicles will use an algorithm that generates a "wellness score" for each passenger that it has developed from more than 24,000 kilometres of testing, including factors such as checking emails while in transit. Settings such as seat positioning, climate control and ride mode can then be adjusted automatically to help those suffering from motion sickness, functions that are already partially available on vehicles such as Jaguar's E-Pace SUV. Previously, "little has been known about the causes and how to mitigate them", says Spencer Salter, wellness technology researcher at JLR. “As we move towards an autonomous future where occupants will have more time to either work, read or relax on longer journeys, it's important we develop vehicles that can adapt to reduce the effects of motion sickness in a way that's tailored to each passenger.” The first phase of the research will be completed this month, although no date has been set for when we might see this technology hit the showrooms and roads of the UAE. __________________ Read more: Latest from The National's Motoring section
