NEWCASTLE RATINGS: Karl Darlow – 6, Was expected to be dropped by many with the return of Dubravka from injury but kept his place under Eddie Howe. Fumbled Toney’s shot that should have been an easy one for the goalie and will be disappointed to see that end up in the back of the net. PA

Fabian Schar – 7, Had seen his game time limited since the beginning of the season but straight into the starting lineup in Eddie Howe’s first squad as head coach. Crucial block in front of goal to stop Toney getting a second. Disappointing to see his afternoon come to an early end through injury. Reuters

Jamaal Lascelles – 7, A reliable captain under Steve Bruce and reliable again under Eddie Howe, heading in Newcastle’s opener. Unlucky to deflect Onyeka’s shot which was going wide into his own net. PA

Ciaran Clark – 7, Jumped the highest to meet Ritchie’s corner in the second half but didn’t have enough power and was ultimately easy for Fernandez to claim. Did make a great run into the box to link up play but was unspotted and left out of position, though the move ended in a goal for his team. PA

Jacob Murphy – 6, Did enough against Brighton to keep his place. Tried a crack with a long cross-cum-shot into the box to get a deflection as Newcastle looked for an equaliser. Getty Images

Joe Willock – 6, Dropped in recent games but a starter during Howe’s first game in charge. Was given an early warning by the referee after a foul on Canos. Couldn’t do a ton to impress his new boss and force himself in the game. Getty Images

Jonjo Shelvey – 6, Got his first start since August against Brighton after missing the start of the season with a calf injury but kept his place under Howe. Didn’t do anything too noteworthy in the middle. PA

Matt Ritchie – 7, Howe will know what to expect from the Scotsman after his time at Bournemouth and was consistent in his deliveries. Delivered the corner for Lascelles’ goal. Getty Images

Joelinton – 8, Back into the starting line-up. Fought both ends of the pitch, happy to hold up play and drop deep as he looked to impress Howe. Scored his first goal of the season to get his side of level terms going in at half time. Couldn’t stay on his feet to slot home Saint-Maximin’s pass. PA

Callum Wilson – 7, Saw his header just only an inch wide within the first three minutes as he looked to help his former Bournemouth boss off to a good start. Just couldn’t get his name on the scoresheet. Booked. Getty Images

Allan Saint-Maximin – 9, Couldn’t convert Murphy’s cross in the box in the early stages. No surprise to see him creating the second goal. Blazed over the bar as Newcastle looked for a third after some lovely play to trick Brentford. Finally got his deserved goal with Newcastle’s equaliser. He made the goal, made the run for Fraser’s cross and a delightful goal. Booked for celebrations. AP

Pontus Jansson – 7, Quiet first half for the captain. Raised concerns with a lengthy spell down receiving treatment after a foul by Wilson but largely safe. PA
