It was a case of out with the old and in with the new for a host of Premier League clubs during Wednesday's third round Carabao Cup action. Harvey Elliott became the youngest player to start a competitive match for Liverpool as the 16-year-old winger helped the Reds advance with a 2-0 win over MK Dons. "Sixteen years old still and this kind of footballer, it is good for us," Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said of Elliott after goals from James Milner and Ki-Jana Hoever, another teenager on Liverpool's books, earned a last-16 tie against Arsenal. Breaking records is nothing new to the highly-rated Elliott, who became the youngest to play in the League Cup when he appeared for Fulham in a third round tie against Millwall last season at the age of 15 years and 174 days. Elliott was part of a front three with a combined age of only 53, just a year older than their manager, alongside Curtis Jones, 18, and 19-year-old Rhian Brewster. Goalkeeper Caoimhin Keller, could be considered part of the Liverpool "old guard" at age 20. Eighteen-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi celebrated signing a new five-year contract with Chelsea by scoring his side's final goal in a rout of Grimsby Town. Chelsea had six youth players on the pitch and four more on the bench by the end of this 7-1 romp, with Ian Maatsen and Tino Anjorin coming on for their debuts midway through the second half while Reece James, 19, was among the Chelsea scorers. League One side Rochdale pushed Premier League Manchester United all the way at Old Trafford before losing 5-3 on penalties. Mason Greenwood, United's 17-year-old striker, opened the scoring but was upstaged by another whippersnapper in the form of Rochdale defender Luke Matheson, 16, who equalised on 76 minutes to send the match into extra time. It was a first goal for the young defender in only his 11th senior match. Matheson is already the youngest player in Rochdale's history after making his league debut last year, and celebrated his goal like, well, a teenager in front of the visiting fans. "I struck it and it hit the roof of the net and my body just took over," he told reporters. "I sprinted to the Dale fans and did a knee slide. I thought I was going to go down the hill. It's a special moment ... most of my best mates are United fans. I've not turned my phone on yet. I'm dreading it." Even more impressive when you consider Matheson had to take the day off school to prepare for the match when he should really have been at home to prepare for a psychology test in school on Thursday.
