Three's Kompany for Vincent

MANCHESTER // Manchester City newcomer Vincent Kompany admitted he did not even know his teammates' names before his impressive Premier League debut in their 3-0 win at home to West Ham. City won the points thanks to a brace from the Brazilian schemer Elano after Daniel Sturridge had opened the scoring following the dismissal of the West Ham midfielder Mark Noble. The win was marred slightly though by the hospitalisation of City defender Micah Richards, who was hurt in a collision with teammate Tal Ben Haim. Kompany, who signed from Hamburg last week, thoroughly enjoyed his debut and said after the game: "I just loved it. I enjoyed it 100 per cent ? lots of duels, lots of energy. "I've got to be honest, I signed two days ago, trained once and today I played and didn't know their names. "During the game I learnt their names, learnt how everyone plays. "It was a lot of fun. I wanted to play an intelligent game and try to do my best for the team." The versatile Belgium international began the match in midfield but dropped back to centre-half when Richards went off injured. "I loved it in midfield but a job had to be done in defence," Kompany added. "That's why the trainer (manager Mark Hughes) took me, because he can count on me in different positions. "I'm just happy with the result." A jubilant Hughes praised his new signing and admitted there may be more to follow before the close of the summer transfer window on Aug 31. "Vincent Kompany was excellent, Stephen Ireland came in and had a real effect," the City boss said. "There were a lot of positives today, Daniel Sturridge got on the scoresheet, which we wanted him to do." As for further reinforcements, Hughes revealed he has further money to spend. "Yes, I have," he added. "You saw one purchase today (Kompany) that cost a significant amount of money and we'll be back in the market trying to sign good players. "The money is there for me to invest."
