Tottenham missed out on the chance to go third in the table after an embarrassing home defeat to lowly Wolves.
Kevin Doyle flicked home a third-minute free kick from Menad Milijas for the only goal of the game. Tottenham then dominated and had 19 attempts on goal, but could not find a breakthrough as Mick McCarthy's Wolves lifted themselves out of the relegation zone.
They were replaced by West Ham after Lee Bowyer's third goal in four games for Birmingham, against his former club, earned a 1-0 win at St Andrew's. He ran on to a pass from Christian Benitez to score in the 52nd minute against the Hammers, who had Mark Noble sent off.
Younes Kaboul scored in the last minute to earn a point for bottom side Portsmouth against Sunderland - and was then sent off for a second yellow card for celebrating. Darren Bent had opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season in the 23rd minute.
In the day's early game Thomas Sorensen saved an 89th-minute penalty to earn Stoke a point in a 2-2 draw with Wigan after a thrilling second half at the Britannia Stadium. Stoke came from behind twice before Sorensen kept out Hugo Rodallega's penalty.
Emmerson Boyce's early header was cancelled out by Tuncay Sanli's first goal for the Potters before the interval. Maynor Figueroa then scored one of the goals of the season with a 72nd-minute free-kick from inside his own half but Ryan Shawcross equalised with a header.
Figueroa's goal was from about 60 yards out and his manager Roberto Martinez said: "I think it was a special moment, one of those moments when it is well worth being involved in football. It is just a shame that goal was not part of a winning scoreline."
As spectacular volley from Wade Elliot in the 60th minute earned a point for Burnley at home to Fulham after Bobby Zamora's opener, while Blackburn drew 0-0 at Hull.
