JOHANNESBURG // Robin van Persie has been cleared to face Uruguay in the World Cup semi-finals despite injuring his left elbow against Brazil.
Monique Kessels, the Dutch team spokeswoman, said yesterday a scan had showed the injury was not as serious as first feared.
"It was his elbow. I don't know the exact results of the scan but it's good news," Kessels said.
Joris Mathijsen, the defender, is also fit, Kessels said, despite being a late withdrawal before Friday's 2-1 quarter-final win over Brazil because of a right knee injury.
"The injuries to both players are not that serious," Kessels said. "Van Persie trained but not with the group, so that he did not have any physical contact with the other players. Mathijsen also trained on his own his own but later joined in with the others."
Although Van Persie has been cleared to play, his form at the World Cup has not been as good as the Dutch had hoped. He has started all five games but has been taken off each time and scored only once, in the team's 2-1 final Group E victory over Cameroon.
Meanwhile, Diego Lugano, the Uruguay captain, is struggling to be fit for the Holland encounter.
Lugano injured a right knee ligament in the quarter-final win against Ghana, but was able to jog in straight lines during training yesterday, raising hopes he could be fit for tomorrow's match.
"It's complicated because the time between matches is so short now," the central defender said. "But I was lucky enough to be able to train and run in straight lines, which is very favourable."
Uruguay, two-time champions, are through to the semi-finals for the first time in 40 years.
The defence has been a major factor in the team's progress, conceding just two goals , but injuries and suspensions will mean changes for the semi-final.
Left-back Jorge Fucile will miss the match after receiving a second yellow card against Ghana, while central defender Diego Godin is also a doubt with a thigh problem. Striker Luis Suarez is suspended after the last-minute red card he was shown for his handball on the line against Ghana.
The absences make Lugano's recovery all the more important. "The risk of pain is the last thing on my mind," Lugano said.
"Everybody wants to play in these games but the question is whether I'm physically 100 per cent to be able to play a game at this level.
"I have to be honest with the team and if I'm not able to play there are other players who can come in and do a good job. I'm doing everything I can to be fit and then the coaching staff and doctor will make a decision about whether I play."

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021
Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.
The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.
These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.
“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.
“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.
“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.
“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”
Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.
There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.
“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.
“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.
“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”

What is blockchain?
Blockchain is a form of distributed ledger technology, a digital system in which data is recorded across multiple places at the same time. Unlike traditional databases, DLTs have no central administrator or centralised data storage. They are transparent because the data is visible and, because they are automatically replicated and impossible to be tampered with, they are secure.
The main difference between blockchain and other forms of DLT is the way data is stored as ‘blocks’ – new transactions are added to the existing ‘chain’ of past transactions, hence the name ‘blockchain’. It is impossible to delete or modify information on the chain due to the replication of blocks across various locations.
Blockchain is mostly associated with cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Due to the inability to tamper with transactions, advocates say this makes the currency more secure and safer than traditional systems. It is maintained by a network of people referred to as ‘miners’, who receive rewards for solving complex mathematical equations that enable transactions to go through.
However, one of the major problems that has come to light has been the presence of illicit material buried in the Bitcoin blockchain, linking it to the dark web.
Other blockchain platforms can offer things like smart contracts, which are automatically implemented when specific conditions from all interested parties are reached, cutting the time involved and the risk of mistakes. Another use could be storing medical records, as patients can be confident their information cannot be changed. The technology can also be used in supply chains, voting and has the potential to used for storing property records.

What are NFTs?
Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.
You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.
