Attempted murder charges in robbery case

DUBAI // A 20-year-old unemployed man denied charges of attempted murder and theft at the Dubai Court of First Instance this morning.

AS, a Pakistani, is accused of assaulting an Indian technician on April 4, 2010, records show.

According to court records, the suspect and four other men stopped their car next to the victim, AA, and three of them, including AS, stepped out of the vehicle and approached him.

They told him they were from the Criminal investigation Department and requested his ID card and wallet, records said.

AA was suspicious and refused to comply, records show. At that point, AS stabbed him in the chest, left arm and buttocks with a sword, it is alleged. He then took his wallet, which had Dh450, as well as two mobile phones worth Dh750, records stated.

AA said the suspect wanted to kill him, fearing he would call police, but one of his accomplices persuaded him not to, prosecutors said.

AS is charged with attempted murder and armed robbery. The four men who allegedly were with him are not in custody.

The next hearing has been rescheduled for February 27 to allow the defence lawyer get a copy of the file.
