Dozens arrested for begging in Ajman 'had money on them'

Dozens of beggars have been arrested in Ajman since the beginning of Ramadan.
Maj Ahmad Al Nuaimi, director of Ajman's criminal investigation department, said that 13 men and 11 women from Arab and Asian countries have been caught begging outside mosques, shops and malls.
All of those arrested had money on them. Police said some have already been deported while others are awaiting legal action against them.

The beggars were arrested during inspections that are part of police's Ramadan campaign.

"This is not the first year we launch such a campaign but the difference this year is people's response to it," said Maj Al Nuaimi.
He said that, for the first time, members of the public have begun reporting beggars when they would previously refrain from calling police out of compassion.
"Begging disturbs the public and the days of the holy month and Ajman has many charities to which needy people can go," Maj Al Nuaimi said.

"This proves that beggars have made a career from this practice and its not about them being needy.”

He called on the public to report beggars by calling 067034310.
