Commuters in Abu Dhabi were subjected to lengthy delays in rush hour traffic on Sunday morning due to the partial closure of Sheikh Zayed Tunnel. It is not known what caused the closure of the tunnel outbound from the Corniche entrance, which is one of the main routes out of the city, but Abu Dhabi Traffic tweeted a message to say it had been shut at 9.22am. It had been reopened again by 9.55am. One commuter complained that it added an extra 30 minutes on her commute. “As I was heading from the Corniche this morning, there was a sign saying that Sheikh Zayed Tunnel was closed. Normally if you go into the tunnel you come out straight onto the main road to Dubai.” She said that she was forced to drive on an adjacent road until she reached Abu Dhabi Investment Council headquarters. “You went on the parallel road because there was a lot of traffic on it because there is a detour there as well, because of other road works. Every time the lights changed people were across the intersection, blocking people from coming and going.” _______________ Read more: _______________ The two left lanes in both directions of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street at the Sea Palace Tunnel will be closed each Thursday night from 9.30pm until midnight until August 31 due to road works, according to the Department of Transport.
