Adec offers new places to Al Worood pupils as school closure nears

The student body at Al Worood Academy Private School has been offered alternative school places on and off Abu Dhabi island, the Abu Dhabi Education Council announced on Thursday.

The school had been ordered to close by the end of August as a result of its negligence in adhering to safety and security measures. In October, a KG1 pupil, Nizaha Aalaa, died after she was left behind on a school bus.

The decision affects nearly 2,000 pupils.

Adec will issue relocations relative to where pupils live, and has ensured that siblings will be moved together. Parents can pick up the reallocation letters from the school premises after receiving an SMS from Adec detailing the date and time of collection.

Each letter clearly states that parents have a week from the date of receipt of the letter to approach the assigned new school for registration. If parents opt for other private or public schools, it is their responsibility to do so at their own expense.

A bus driver and supervisor were sentenced to three years in jail for negligence that led to the death of Nizaha. The owner of the transport company that leased the vehicle to the school and a school administrator were also found guilty of charges related to her death.

The school was ordered to close and fined Dh150,000 by the Abu Dhabi Court of Misdemeanours.
