SHARJAH // The family of an American teenager who killed his father by hitting him with a fire extinguisher have decided to drop the charges against him.
The victim’s brothers on Monday agreed to sign a waiver of the charges and submit it to Sharjah Criminal Court at the next hearing, which will take place on October 12.
They did so after the judge in charge of the case asked yesterday if they would like to do so.
The 18-year-old American student had told the court that he did not mean to kill his father and did not remember doing it.
The student’s uncle found the body after receiving a call to say his brother was sick at his office, a previous court hearing was told.
The uncle saw his nephew going upstairs to the office. He followed, and saw the boy kissing his father’s head.
“He grabbed a fire extinguisher that was near the body and told me to hit him with it, just like he did to his father,” he said. “Then he produced a small knife and asked me to stab him with it.”
He said his nephew had received psychiatric treatment and had medical reports to prove it. There were no problems between the father and son, he said.
Prosecutors have referred the teenager to a hospital for a psychological evaluation.
