DUBAI // The UAE has reaffirmed its commitment to tackle human trafficking on World Day against Trafficking in Persons.
The United Nations launched a programme to promote international cooperation to eradicate the crime and the UAE has an important role to play.
“The World Day against Trafficking in Persons is a great opportunity for the UAE to reaffirm the nation’s support to the UN’s plans to combat the global menace of human trafficking,” said Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign and FNC Affairs and chairman of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT).
“This is an occasion to highlight our keen desire to coordinate with the international efforts to raise awareness among all entities concerned on the impacts of trafficking in order to achieve positive results at local, regional and international levels.”
He was speaking during a ceremony with Sergei Balujurtsev, minister and deputy head of mission of the embassy of the Republic of Belarus in the UAE, Asma Fakhri, project coordinator (Drug Demand Reduction) at United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for the GCC countries, and a group of diplomats, representatives of the Republic of Belarus, as well as members of the NCCHT.
“The organisation of activities on this day is the result of international cooperation to contain these crimes through effective solutions and legislation,” he said..
The UAE plays an important role in the fight against human trafficking and has gained international acclaim by implementing a ‘5 Ps’ strategy, which comprises prevention, prosecution, punishment, protection and promotion of international cooperation, he said.
At the event, at Raffles Hotel in Dubai, the Belorussian delegation reviewed the measures taken by the UAE government on the issue and discussions were held on further cooperation.

Moment of the day When Dilruwan Perera dismissed Yasir Shah to end Pakistan’s limp resistance, the Sri Lankans charged around the field with the fevered delirium of a side not used to winning. Trouble was, they had not. The delivery was deemed a no ball. Sri Lanka had a nervy wait, but it was merely a stay of execution for the beleaguered hosts.
Stat of the day – 5 Pakistan have lost all 10 wickets on the fifth day of a Test five times since the start of 2016. It is an alarming departure for a side who had apparently erased regular collapses from their resume. “The only thing I can say, it’s not a mitigating excuse at all, but that’s a young batting line up, obviously trying to find their way,” said Mickey Arthur, Pakistan’s coach.
The verdict Test matches in the UAE are known for speeding up on the last two days, but this was extreme. The first two innings of this Test took 11 sessions to complete. The remaining two were done in less than four. The nature of Pakistan’s capitulation at the end showed just how difficult the transition is going to be in the post Misbah-ul-Haq era.
