The relationship between UAE and South Korea first began in 1980 when South Korea was still trying to overcome economic poverty.
“The relations with the UAE strongly relate to the development of Korea,” said Jin-wook Hong, director-general of the African and Middle Eastern Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul.
"Both countries built the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant and, at the end of this year, we hope to be able to see the [operation] of the first nuclear reactor."
Last June, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and President Jae-in Moon touched upon various fields of co-operation, from nuclear to defence and security.

“Korea has despatched special forces to be deployed in the Abu Dhabi area and those areas of co-operation are the very symbols of a long-lasting bilateral relationship,” Mr Hong said.
"We've been expanding the areas of co-operation like medical, healthcare, tourism, with more than 20 flights per week between Korea and Abu Dhabi and more than 200,000 Koreans flying to the UAE every year."
South Korea has also been contributing to the development of UAE satellites, such as Khalifa Sat, currently in Korea for its final check-up before launching later this year.
In e-government, Korea is helping to export its state-of-the-art technology in custom clearance to help reduce waiting times of cargo. "The UAE is interested in introducing those kind of user-friendly systems," Mr Hong said.
“Korea is also helping the UAE government set up an electronic patent system for handling patent-related affairs.”

The Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index
Mazen Abukhater, principal and actuary at global consultancy Mercer, Middle East, says the company’s Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index - which benchmarks 34 pension schemes across the globe to assess their adequacy, sustainability and integrity - included Saudi Arabia for the first time this year to offer a glimpse into the region.
The index highlighted fundamental issues for all 34 countries, such as a rapid ageing population and a low growth / low interest environment putting pressure on expected returns. It also highlighted the increasing popularity around the world of defined contribution schemes.
“Average life expectancy has been increasing by about three years every 10 years. Someone born in 1947 is expected to live until 85 whereas someone born in 2007 is expected to live to 103,” Mr Abukhater told the Mena Pensions Conference.
“Are our systems equipped to handle these kind of life expectancies in the future? If so many people retire at 60, they are going to be in retirement for 43 years – so we need to adapt our retirement age to our changing life expectancy.”
Saudi Arabia came in the middle of Mercer’s ranking with a score of 58.9. The report said the country's index could be raised by improving the minimum level of support for the poorest aged individuals and increasing the labour force participation rate at older ages as life expectancies rise.
Mr Abukhater said the challenges of an ageing population, increased life expectancy and some individuals relying solely on their government for financial support in their retirement years will put the system under strain.
“To relieve that pressure, governments need to consider whether it is time to switch to a defined contribution scheme so that individuals can supplement their own future with the help of government support,” he said.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
