Litter bugs be warned, Sharjah Municipality inspectors are combing the desert for you.
Just this past month, inspectors fined 200 visitors and residents for littering in desert areas across the emirate as authorities ramp up a campaign to protect the environment.
A team of 60 inspectors who patrol the emirate’s desert areas, landmarks and parks - such as Al Qasba, Al Hira and Al Mamzar beaches - issued violators with a Dh500 fine for not placing garbage in trash bins.
Hana Al Suwaidi, director of Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority said inspectors have been carrying out field visits to desert areas and other landmarks in the emirate to warn and fine people who are littering.
"They have been warning people and spreading awareness about the importance of the emirate's cleanliness and hygiene (standards), preservation of the environment and (raising awareness) that conservation in Sharjah and the UAE is instrumental to ensure a sustainable environment for future generations," said Ms Hana.
She added that revenue generation was not the goal in issuing fines, but a means to deter residents and visitors from disturbing an environment that belongs to all.
