A man was granted early release 15 years into a life in prison sentence for kidnapping and killing a woman in return for $300 (Dh1,100).
Dubai Criminal Court granted the Uzbek man early release after the 59-year-old earned a certificate of good behaviour from authorities.
In 2001, a 40-year-old brothel owner hired the inmate to kidnap a woman he forced into working for him who had run away.
The Turkman trafficked the victim, also from Turkmenistan, to Dubai in February that year then forced her to work as a prostitute.
A month later, the woman ran away and took shelter at a friend’s flat until she could leave the country.
The Uzbek, who was hired a few days later, said he went to the flat where the woman was staying on March 16, 2001.
He said he tried to drag her out of hiding and take her bag to the brothel but she resisted.
“I didn't mean to kill her but as a result of the struggle between the two of us, the woman’s neck broke and she died instantly,” the man said in court records.
Prosecutors said the Uzbek dropped the woman’s body from the balcony of the seventh floor of a building in Al Muraqqabat to make it look like a suicide then fled the crime scene.
Police received a report of someone having fallen from a building but initial investigations showed that the woman was murdered.
Shortly after, police arrested the killer, the man who hired him, and the woman in whose flat the victim was hiding.
All three were charged with premeditated murder. The Uzbek and the Turkman were additionally charged with kidnap while the Turkman was also charged with running a prostitution ring.
Charges against the flat owner were dismissed in court.
On February 18, 2002, the two men were convicted of all charges and sentenced to life in jail by Dubai Criminal Court.
The Turkman was sentenced to an additional five years in jail for running a brothel.
On April 28, 2016, the Uzbek applied for early release, a right granted by UAE law to inmates with good behaviour who have served 15 years of their prison term.
On Monday the court granted his release and ordered he be immediately deported.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Plan to boost public schools
A major shake-up of government-run schools was rolled out across the country in 2017. Known as the Emirati School Model, it placed more emphasis on maths and science while also adding practical skills to the curriculum.
It was accompanied by the promise of a Dh5 billion investment, over six years, to pay for state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements.
Aspects of the school model will be extended to international private schools, the education minister has previously suggested.
Recent developments have also included the introduction of moral education - which public and private schools both must teach - along with reform of the exams system and tougher teacher licensing requirements.

How to get exposure to gold
Although you can buy gold easily on the Dubai markets, the problem with buying physical bars, coins or jewellery is that you then have storage, security and insurance issues.
A far easier option is to invest in a low-cost exchange traded fund (ETF) that invests in the precious metal instead, for example, ETFS Physical Gold (PHAU) and iShares Physical Gold (SGLN) both track physical gold. The VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF invests directly in mining companies.
Alternatively, BlackRock Gold & General seeks to achieve long-term capital growth primarily through an actively managed portfolio of gold mining, commodity and precious-metal related shares. Its largest portfolio holdings include gold miners Newcrest Mining, Barrick Gold Corp, Agnico Eagle Mines and the NewMont Goldcorp.
Brave investors could take on the added risk of buying individual gold mining stocks, many of which have performed wonderfully well lately.
London-listed Centamin is up more than 70 per cent in just three months, although in a sign of its volatility, it is down 5 per cent on two years ago. Trans-Siberian Gold, listed on London's alternative investment market (AIM) for small stocks, has seen its share price almost quadruple from 34p to 124p over the same period, but do not assume this kind of runaway growth can continue for long
However, buying individual equities like these is highly risky, as their share prices can crash just as quickly, which isn't what what you want from a supposedly safe haven.
