Vast sections of Ajman have been sealed off by armed police this morning in an operation believed to be aimed at rounding up illegal immigrants living in the emirate.
Roads to and from Ajman were sealed off early this morning and police helicopters circled overhead.
A strong police presence was reported around Ajman New Industrial Estate.
Residents reported that shopkeepers had been asked for their labour cards by police, who were combing work places with search dogs.
Those attempting to enter Ajman were turned away by armed police, who said that the operation was being held to curb "problems with labourers".

The Africa Institute 101
Housed on the same site as the original Africa Hall, which first hosted an Arab-African Symposium in 1976, the newly renovated building will be home to a think tank and postgraduate studies hub (it will offer master’s and PhD programmes). The centre will focus on both the historical and contemporary links between Africa and the Gulf, and will serve as a meeting place for conferences, symposia, lectures, film screenings, plays, musical performances and more. In fact, today it is hosting a symposium – 5-plus-1: Rethinking Abstraction that will look at the six decades of Frank Bowling’s career, as well as those of his contemporaries that invested social, cultural and personal meaning into abstraction.
La Mer lowdown
La Mer beach is open from 10am until midnight, daily, and is located in Jumeirah 1, well after Kite Beach. Some restaurants, like Cupagahwa, are open from 8am for breakfast; most others start at noon. At the time of writing, we noticed that signs for Vicolo, an Italian eatery, and Kaftan, a Turkish restaurant, indicated that these two restaurants will be open soon, most likely this month. Parking is available, as well as a Dh100 all-day valet option or a Dh50 valet service if you’re just stopping by for a few hours.
