ABU DHABI// The first set of air-conditioned bus shelters in the capital are under construction, with at least 10 expected to be in operation by the end of this month.
One shelter has been put up on Hazza bin Zayed Street across the road from Al Wahda Mall and is surrounded by boards.
Yesterday, electrical wires could be seen hanging from the structure, which has eight seats and a roof, but no walls as yet.
Another shelter is on Airport Road near an ADNOC station between Hazza bin Zayed and Delma Streets.
Most of the first batch are being built along Airport Road and Fourth Street.
Saeed al Hameli, general manager of bus transportation for the Department of Transport, said in May that the first shelters would be operational by the end of this month.
It is understood at least 10 would be switched on this month.
Mr Hameli said 80 air-conditioned shelters would be installed on the island by October and 550 by the end of 2010.
Previously, the department had said it would open 170 shelters this summer, some of which would be air-conditioned.
The first with air-conditioning was opened in November near the Central Bank building on Bainunah Street. It has eight seats and standing room for 16 people.
Mr al Hameli has said in the past that all 550 shelters would have air conditioning and keep the same specifications as that first shelter.
The capital now has nine bus routes; by the end of next year the DoT plans to have 1,360 buses running on up to 150 local, regional and inter-city routes.

Defining head lice
Pediculus humanus capitis are tiny wingless insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. The adult head louse is up to 3mm long, has six legs, and is tan to greyish-white in colour. The female lives up to four weeks and, once mature, can lay up to 10 eggs per day. These tiny nits firmly attach to the base of the hair shaft, get incubated by body heat and hatch in eight days or so.
Identifying lice
Lice can be identified by itching or a tickling sensation of something moving within the hair. One can confirm that a person has lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs or lice. Head lice are most frequently located behind the ears and near the neckline.
Treating lice at home
Head lice must be treated as soon as they are spotted. Start by checking everyone in the family for them, then follow these steps. Remove and wash all clothing and bedding with hot water. Apply medicine according to the label instructions. If some live lice are still found eight to 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not re-treat. Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine-toothed comb.
After the initial treatment, check for, comb and remove nits and lice from hair every two to three days. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.

Get financially independent: Mr Cronin advises UAE residents to pursue financial independence. Start with a Google search and improve your knowledge via expat investing websites or Facebook groups such as SimplyFI.
