Road deaths in Abu Dhabi fall by 22 per cent

There has been a sharp reduction in fatal accidents on Abu Dhabi's roads during the first four months of the year.

Abu Dhabi Police reported an 11 per cent decrease in traffic accidents and 22 per cent in deaths on the same period last year.

Deaths caused by people being run over fell by 50 per cent.

This came despite an 11 per cent rise in the number of vehicles and six per cent increase in the number of licence holders on the roads.

Maj Gen Ali Al Dhaheri, director of central operations sector at Abu Dhabi Police, pointed to the importance of surveillance cameras and smart towers (there are 14 of these towers in Abu Dhabi emirate) in ensuring safety on our roads.

''Excessive speed accounted for 84 per cent of traffic violations issued during the monitored period,'' he said.

Radars had caught 115,000 motorists despite the police's announcement of locations of these smart devices.

He said that the smart police application had caught 91,700 motorists during the period from January to April.

He also added that Abu Dhabi Police has installed smart cameras at the entrances and exits of the Qasr Al Bahr tunnel, which ensures regular traffic flow for Al Reem Island.

Maj Gen Al Dhaheri also urged drivers to stay vigilant, and to avoid veering into other lanes suddenly and to slow down.

He urged parents to advise youngsters about road safety, explaining that young people between the ages of 18 and 30 caused 46 per cent of accidents.

Electoral College Victory

Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.

Popular Vote Tally

The count is ongoing, but Trump currently leads with nearly 51 per cent of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.6 per cent. Trump has over 72.2 million votes, while Harris trails with approximately 67.4 million.
