UK regulators have urged British Muslims to be wary of fraudsters seeking to take advantage of the estimated £130 million given in the UK during Ramadan. Officials said fake charities and street collections could be used by scammers to secure money intended for good causes in the UK and Middle East. It has published a list of warning signs and precautions that could be taken to ensure that money was going to strengthen communities and institutions. Gerald Oppenheim, chief executive of the Fundraising Regulator, said: “Unfortunately there are people who will try to take advantage of the generosity of the Muslim community. “The fundraiser asking for your money should know where it’s going, so don’t be afraid to ask them.”
