British soldier killed in Syria named as Sergeant Matt Tonroe

A British soldier killed by a roadside bomb in Syria was named as Sergeant Matt Tonroe of the Parachute Regiment, Britain's defence ministry said.

He was the first British soldier to be killed in Syria fighting ISIL militants.

"Tonroe, from the 3rd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, was tragically killed in action whilst on duty in the Middle East on the 29th March 2018," the ministry said.

The 33-year-old was attached to US forces in an operation against ISIL. A US soldier was killed with him.

The location of the bomb was not confirmed by the US military. However, it followed reports by Syrian officials of a bomb in Manbij, an Arab-Kurdish town near the Turkish border.

Defence secretary Gavin Williamson said "his sacrifice, unflinching commitment and bravery" would never be forgotten.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Williamson added: "Sgt Tonroe fought to protect British values, our freedoms and to keep us back at home safe."

Tonroe, who was born in Manchester, is survived by his mother, brother, and girlfriend, Olivia.
