Park Ryu Sook is a contemporary art gallery based in Seoul that was established in 1983 by the eponymous dealer. At Abu Dhabi Art, their booth is displaying some of the leading Korean artists including Park Seo-Bo who is famous for his Ecriture series – a minimalist collection made from Korean hanji paper that he has shaped into ridges. Quietly compelling, this work deserves time for reflection.
Also on display is the work of Kim Tschang-Yeul, who paints hyper realistic droplets of water upon a background made of lettering and hanging opposite that are pieces by Yoo Seung-ho, who makes landscapes from letters. From afar, his pictures bear a resemblance to classical mountain and water paintings from China and Korea however, a closer look reveals a painstaking accumulation of onomatopoeic Korean characters – it is impressive work.
Overall, the booth might be one that you pass by because of the minimal nature of the works and the fact that it is tucked away in the corner of Hall One. But be sure to stop and take a look.
