Tashkeel reveals new workshops and talks for January and February

Tashkeel was first established in 2008 by Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum in a bid to encourage the local arts scene, providing a nurturing environment for the growth of contemporary art and design from the UAE. They do this through an annual programme of training, residencies, talks, exhibitions, collaborations, publications and workshops that the team does this. This year is no different, as Tashkeel reveals its schedule of workshops for January and February 2019. Advanced Palestinian Embroidery (Tatreez) Instructor: Joanna Barakat Date: January 26, 10am to noon Location: Tashkeel Nad Al Sheba Cost: Dh180 If you got yourself involved in the original Introduction to Palestinian Embroidery (Tatreez) workshop in September, then this is the follow-up you won't want to miss. Learn new skills by cross-stitching a motif on a tote bag (or your own clothing, if you prefer). It's also open to anyone who already knows how to cross-stitch on Aida fabric. ______________________________ Youth x Hub: Binding Books! Instructor: Salama Nasib Date: January 26, 10am to 1pm Location: Youth x Hub, Emirates Towers, Dubai Cost: Free Artist Salama Nasib is leading an introduction to the basics of bookbinding. You'll explore three techniques — accordion, single signature and Japanese stab binding — and leave with your own hand-bound book. The workshop is in Arabic and English. ______________________________ Youth x Hub: Volunteer for Art Week Instructor: Lisa Ball-Lechgar Date: January 29, 5 to 8pm Location: Youth x Hub, Emirates Towers, Dubai Cost: Free Want to explore a career in the UAE arts sector? Volunteering could be a good place to start. Lisa Ball-Lechgar, Tashkeel's deputy director, will be leading an informative briefing session for people who want to be part of the Tashkeel team during Art Dubai 2019, which takes place in March. ______________________________ Branding with Arabic Typography Instructor: Tarek Atrissi Dates: February 7 (6pm to 9pm), 8 (11am to 4pm), 9 (11am to 4pm) and 10 (6pm to 9pm) Location: Tashkeel Nad Al Sheba Cost: Dh1,700 Award-winning designer Tarek Atrissi will host an intensive four-day workshop on using Arabic typography for creating brand narratives and creative visual systems. It aims to examine the wider context of branding and the process of conceptualising, naming, designing and managing a comprehensive visual identity, using regional and international case studies. It gives participants practical and theoretical knowledge. ______________________________ Drop in and Draw: Travelogue Instructor: Mohammad Yousuf Alshaibani Date: February 7, 6pm to 8pm Location: Tashkeel Nad Al Sheba Fees: Dh70 Every month, the Drop in and Draw sessions invite artists, designers and creatives who want to share their sketchbook ideas with each other, explore drawing approaches and techniques, as well as build-up confidence. In this iteration, Mohammad Yousuf Alshaibani will take you through the process of making a travelogue and diary comics using words, photographs and illustrations / drawings. ______________________________ Introduction to the Darkroom Instructor: Mona Ayyash Date: February 9 and 16, 10am to 4pm Location: Tashkeel Nad Al Sheba This two-part introductory workshop will take you through the darkroom for black-and-white photography. It's designed specifically for beginners, who are looking to get to know more about analogue film processing and photo printing. By the end of the sessions, students will have developed a roll of film, made a contact sheet and printed some photographs. ______________________________ Realistic Drawing for Beginners Instructor: Osama Khalaf Dates: February 9, 16, 23 and March 9, 10am to 4pm Location: Tashkeel Nad Al Sheba Cost: Dh1,304.76 Osama Khalaf will focus on portraiture through charcoal in this workshop. You'll use Conte a Paris charcoal and graphite on Scholler Hammer G4 paper to explore traditional techniques of realistic portraiture, also using your own methods to bring your drawing to life. Students will be split into guided groups and get the opportunity to focus on live-drawing sessions and detailed exercises, allowing you the space to develop your own style. ______________________________ Youth x Hub: Fashion Portfolio Instructor: Kay Li Date: February 23, 10am to 1pm Location: Youth x Hub, Emirates Towers, Dubai Cost: Free Dubai-based fashion designer Kay Li will introduce workshop participants to building your own fashion portfolio. She'll discuss how to find inspiration, different research techniques, creating mood boards, current fashion trends and how to use collage / dress stand for garment development. All they ask is for you to take along a few visuals that inspire you. ______________________________ Youth x Hub: First Steps for Emerging Artists in the UAE Instructor: Lisa Ball-Lechgar Date: February 24, 5pm to 8pm Location: Youth x Hub, Emirates Towers, Dubai Cost: Free Lisa Ball-Lechgar will lead a workshop discussion for university students on how best to equip yourself for life after graduation, and how to prepare for a career as an artist.
