Would you like your work to be displayed at Dubai Design Week?

Dubai Design District (D3) has today launched two new projects, both of which aim to encourage creativity in the UAE, while also promoting social change across the Middle East.

The first of these initiatives, Design 100, calls on people in the UAE to come up with a design for a piece of furniture or a functional object related to one (or all) of Sheikh Zayed’s beliefs.

Designers, who must submit a plan, elevations and three-dimensional renders, are advised to consider sustainability. Submissions should be no larger than 100cm high and wide and must be manufactured within a budget of Dh1,000.

A jury of design experts, which has yet to be announced, will select the winning object, one hundred examples of which will displayed and sold during Dubai Design Week in November. All proceeds will be donated to the organisation Dubai Cares and distributed to Syrian refugees.

The deadline for submissions for the Design 100 competition is August 16 and the winner will be announced on September 4.

The second initiative, Design for Good, is focused on finding design solutions that will lead to collaborations between people in D3.

The Mesh, a series of large, yurt-like structures made from wire and wool that will provide shade and a space for creative discussions to take place, is one of two examples that will be launched later this year.

A collaboration between the Fatima bint Mohamed bin Zayed Initiative and Emirati designer Roudha Al Shamsi, The Mesh will be produced by three Afghan women and displayed at Dubai Design Week in November. It will then take up permanent residence in the Dubai Design District.

Mohammad Saeed Al-Shehhi, chief executive of D3, said: "Design offers solutions to any problem, and through the power of design we can ensure a positive impact on various communities. Collaboration has also proven to achieve greater creativity and improved solutions.

"Our decision at D3 to launch Design for Good is based on these fundamentals. We are confident such efforts will bring the local design community together to work towards the cause of supporting and encouraging social change.”
