There were surprises, upsets and predictions proved correct yesterday, as nominations for the 2019 Academy Awards were revealed. From <a href="https://www.thenational.ae/arts-culture/film/black-panther-makes-oscar-history-as-the-first-comic-book-based-film-to-earn-a-best-picture-nomination-1.816900" target="_blank"><em>Black Panther</em> making Oscar history</a> with its Best Picture nomination to <a href="https://www.thenational.ae/arts-culture/film/nadine-labaki-is-the-first-lebanese-female-filmmaker-to-ever-be-nominated-for-an-oscar-1.816615" target="_blank">Nadine Labaki becoming the first female Arab filmmaker</a> nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, there were plenty of landmark nods among the categories. Some stars received their first nominations, such as director Spike Lee; others were old hands, including Glenn Close, who received her seventh accolade. While we still have some time to wait until the winners are revealed (February 24, mark your calendars), much of Hollywood has already started celebrating those up for trophies.
