One of South Korea’s biggest celebrity couples has officially divorced. Actor Song Joong-ki and actress Song Hye-kyo were married back in 2017 after they met on the set of the 2016 hit television series Descendants of the Sun. The two played love interests in the hugely popular series. The couple tied the knot in October 2017 in a lavish ceremony attended by other famous celebrities, including Korean actors Ma Dong-seok and Cha Tae-hyun and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi. They were known as the “Song-Song couple”. Joong-ki first filed for divorce on June 27. News of their initial split after only a year-and-a-half of marriage shocked their fans across Asia. “Rather than denouncing each other and arguing over who is to blame, I hope that the divorce process can be wrapped up amicably,” he said in a statement at that time. Hye-kyo’s agency, United Artists Agency (UAA) Korea, said in a statement the couple’s divorce was legally completed at the Seoul Family Court on Monday. “The case has been settled [amicably] without any alimony payment or division of assets,” it said. Hye-kyo cited “differences in personality” as the reason for their divorce, her talent agency said in a statement. Following news of the split, the actress wiped clear her Instagram account which featured photos with her now ex-husband including taking down their wedding photo.
