A number of films on the theme of tolerance will screen in Abu Dhabi and Dubai this weekend. Titled the Tolerance Film Festival, the event is held in cooperation between the German Embassy, Manarat Al Saadiyat, Cinema Space and the Goethe-Institut (German Cultural Centre) and will take place from Thursday, September 12 to Saturday, September 14. Under the patronage of Minister of Tolerance Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the event will also include a concert by the Emirati Youth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Riad Kudsi. Munich-based film curator Alexander Schwarz will give the event's opening remarks. The silent film consists of four distinct but parallel stories. It's intercut with increasing frequency as the film builds to a climax that demonstrates humankind's persistent intolerance throughout the ages. The timeline covers approximately 2,500 years. <em>7.30pm on Wednesday, September 11 at Cinema Akil, Dubai and 7.30pm on Thursday, September 12 at Manarat at Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi.</em> Susanna Wolff stars as a busy doctor spending a holiday sailing solo at sea. She overcomes a damaged and overcrowded boat full of refugees nearby. Knowing the boat is in danger of capsizing and hundreds of people could drown, she must find a way to help them. <em>12.30pm on Friday, September 13 at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi</em> The documentary focuses on former extremists who have left behind their past and reflect back on their their former lives. The director also recounts her own past as a supporter of a right-wing extremist organisation in Norway. <em>4pm on Friday, September 13 at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi </em> The comedic film by the Oscar-nominated director is set in a remote Lebanese village with residents who are both Muslim and Christians. The film follows the antics of the town's women to keep the village men from starting a religious war. <em>7.30pm on Friday, September 13 at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi </em> The film adaptation of Harper Lee's classic novel is set in the 1930s and focuses on lawyer Atticus Finch and his children Scout and Jem. It follows the same cautionary tale of racism and prejudice and the fears that motivate it. 4pm on Saturday, September 14 at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi The documentary tells the true story of a Palestinian refugee named Ismael Khatib whose son dies after being mistakenly shot by Israeli soldiers. With his wife's consent, they decide to donate his organs to help Israeli children.
