The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced its film nominees for outstanding screenwriting in 2021, with films Judas and the Black Messiah, One Night in Miami ... and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom all receiving nominations. In 2021, for the first time, films that were scheduled for theatrical release but streamed instead owing to the pandemic were considered. Other awards season favourites to make the list of nominees are Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal, however, some titles, including Mank and Nomadland, are notably missing from the list. This is nothing new, though, as the WGA maintains authority over whether scripts are produced under a Writer's Guild contract, and will withhold non-members from being part of the awards. The event, which honours the best in film, television, radio and video game writing, will reveal the winners on Sunday, March 21. Here's a look at the WGA Award film nominees for 2021: Original Screenplay Judas and the Black Messiah (Will Berson and Shaka King) Palm Springs (Andy Siara) Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell) Sound of Metal (Darius and Abraham Marder) The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Aaron Sorkin) Adapted Screenplay Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (Sacha Baron Cohen et al.) Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (Ruben Santiago-Hudson) News of the World (Paul Greengrass and Luke Davies) One Night in Miami (Kemp Powers) The White Tiger (Ramin Bahrani) Documentary Screenplay All In: The Fight for Democracy (Jack Youngelson) The Dissident (Mark Monroe and Bryan Fogel) Herb Alpert Is … (John Scheinfeld) Red Penguins (Gabe Polsky) Totally Under Control (Alex Gibney)
