Regional indie super-group Lekhfa is coming to Abu Dhabi to perform at the Barzakh Festival next March. The band is made up of Egyptian singer-songwriters Maryam Saleh and Maurice Louca, as well as Palestinian multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Tamer Abu Ghazaleh. The performance will be part of the NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Centre season. The trio will close the two-day festival on March 8, with a second headliner to be announced soon. The news marks Lekhfa’s Abu Dhabi debut after the band performed at Dubai’s Wasla music festival in Dubai in February. They are currently in the middle of a successful world tour promoting their self-titled debut album. Released last December, the song collection was critically acclaimed by The National, with our review, praising the band for marrying their socially conscious lyrics with left-of-centre hooks and odd instrumentation: "At times, it sounds like you are listening to a radio whose dial is stuck between stations. But once that passes, you appreciate the contrasts and the fact the trio have a more expansive look when it comes to their work." Lekhfa’s addition to Barzakh Festival comes after NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Centre launched its membership programme. For a fee, culture lovers can sign up and have the chance to attend all of the season’s productions, early booking to free events in addition to a raft of behind the scenes exclusives, including artist meet and greets. “This is the ideal way to support the arts and be part of a larger community of arts lovers,” said the centre’s artistic director Bill Bragin. “In this season, cultures, genres, and styles meet and cross-fertilise in a schedule spotlighting exceptional artists at the top of their fields. We will premiere new collaborations between Arab and non-Arab artists, and have commissioned new works from masters as well as emerging artistic voices, contributing to the building of culture.” For the full list of shows for the 2018-2019 season and information on the membership programme, go to www.nyuad-artscenter.org. ______________________ Read more: 60 things you may not have known about Michael Jackson Should we stay or should we go?
