Miles Kane
Don't Forget Who You Are
Colombia
*** Rapidly becoming a proper celebrity in the UK, Miles Kane is almost the perfect composite indie creation: the vocal stylings of Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner (with whom he once formed an ambitious symphonic supergroup, The Last Shadow Puppets), some Liam Gallagher-style swagger plus the mod fashions of the Olympic cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins. Wiggins and Kane formed a sort of mutual admiration society with Paul Weller last year and the latter co-wrote the best track here, You're Gonna Get It, a thunderous anthem in keeping with the overall tone. Kane wanted "no fat" on his second solo album and it resounds with straightforward, retro rock 'n' roll. The Beatles-inspired strings of Out of Control and gentle piano of Fire in my Heart offer brief intermissions, but generally these are rollicking riffs best enjoyed from a car stereo – or, indeed, racing bike headphones. Fun, occasionally dumb, what shines throughout is the sheer force of Kane's personality. "You always get what you want, just by strutting your stuff," he hollers, in Give Up. His ascent is only just beginning. artslife@thenational.ae Follow us on Facebook for discussions, entertainment, reviews, wellness and news.
