After a quiet two years away from the limelight, with only sporadic social media posts to placate fans, the singer, 32, made a glorious return to television last night, with a hosting stint on Saturday Night Live. As part of the comedy skit show, the Hello singer took to the stage with a monologue, in which she touched upon her weight loss, new music and US politics. For her hosting debut, Adele wore a black tailored peplum top with trousers, with her hair worn in long, loose curls over one shoulder. Here are the highlights from Adele's SNL monologue: "Not only do I genuinely love this show, but it is this show that broke my career here in America, 12 very long years ago," she said. "You see, I was the guest back in 2008, when Sarah Palin came on with Ms Tina Fey ... so obviously a few million people tuned in to watch it and, well, the rest is now history. "Now, I don't know anything about American politics ... and I don't want to say anything too political, so I will just say this: Sarah Palin, babes, thanks for everything," she added, with a wink and a thumbs up. The singer performed her hits Chasing Pavements and Cold Shoulder, and was the highest-rated episode of SNL in 14 years. The day after the show aired, her debut album, 19, went to number one on the iTunes chart for the first time. "My album's not finished," she confirmed, when discussing why she is the host and not the musical guest. "And I am too scared to do both." She then said she'd rather "put on some wigs" and "just see what happens" when getting involved with the show's sketches. In the show, she took part in a number of sketches, including one with Kate McKinnon as a psychic set in 2019 looking forward to 2020 and a The Bachelor spoof, as part of which she also sang. "I know I look really, really different since you last saw me," the Rolling in the Deep singer said, touching on her weight loss, which has been much discussed by fans and media. "But actually, because of all the Covid restrictions and travel bans, I had to travel light and I could only bring half of me," she said. "And this is the half I chose." Adele has chosen to not directly comment on her weight loss journey, but the star reportedly embarked on a health plan last summer, following her split from husband Simon Konecki, who she shares son, Angelo, 8, with. She is thought to have lost 40kg. Adele has, in the past, been dubbed a "live TV liability", given her propensity to swear. SNL is shot live (the clue is in the name) and has strict rules when it comes to language used. "Honestly, I don't really notice that I am doing it anymore," she said, "but to keep myself in check tonight, we have a swear jar." She then joked about the jar with SNL cast member, Kenan Thompson. "Before we really start the show, I want to say a genuine [and] sincere thank you to the frontline workers who are all here in the audience," she said. "They say that once you've been to New York, you keep a little piece of it in your heart forever, so I give it up to you, and give it up to yourselves as well." 'Saturday Night Live' is available to watch in the UAE on OSN Series First.
