As the only Emirati to represent the UAE at the recent World Championships of Beach Ultimate, looking over to see his brother in national dress cheering from the sidelines is a moment that will long be etched in Ahmed Al Shamisi’s memory.
“It was an incredible experience; it was the first time I represented my country,” the 28-year-old says. “To see my brother coming to support me and wearing his national dress ... I think he was the only one [wearing it] on the beach there.”
To cap it off, Al Shamisi scored for his team in the first match. “I was so proud. There was a video online and my dad was showing it to everyone.”
As a boy, he was keen on sport. With seven brothers and two sisters, and no TV or video games, the siblings spent leisure time playing football or volleyball until the sun set over Al Ain.
That passion has continued into his adult years, but after choosing a career in aviation, he was forced to refine his choices.
In 2002, Al Shamisi joined the Air Force. He graduated in 2009 and is now a captain.
“After graduating, I just stuck with running and the gym, then I went online to look for other stuff to do. That’s when I saw Ultimate, so I asked about it, and it interested me because there was no contact.”
Al Shamisi says one of the best things about the sport is that it doesn’t discriminate.
“Sport is like a language everyone can speak. I really hope more Emiratis will start playing and experience the feeling you get playing on an international stage.”
He also hopes the sport’s popularity will gain the attention of organisations such as the Dubai Sports Council.
“All people need here is space to play. To have one indoor, sponsored tournament in the summer will be a great experience.”
What’s your favourite book?
One Thousand and One Nights, the Arabic version. It's just packed with life lessons and it reminds me of my college years when we used to gather and whoever read that individual story would retell it in his own words to other college friends.
What’s your dream job?
Flight safety manager, because aviation is something I’m really passionate about, and it’s a field I feel I can add a lot of value to.
What’s your dream destination?
I really like Bruges in Belgium. It’s just like stepping back in time – it has this feeling that it’s today as it was long time ago. It’s quite peaceful, and I love good chocolate and waffles.
What are your favourite spectator sports?
Soccer, tennis and, of course, Ultimate.
What’s your favourite pastime?
For me, balance is really important, so I like to spend time with family – it really keeps me grounded. I like sport, too, as it keeps me fit and healthy, and I enjoy quality time with friends.
Where do you go to relax?
My home in Al Ain, in the company of my family.
Who’s your favourite sportsperson?
Novak Djokovic [pictured]. He is incredibly talented, worked hard and managed to become number one in the world. At the same time, he keeps his sense of humour and is nice to the people around him. I also admire the Emirati football talent Omar Abdulrahman. He is such an inspiration to all the locals to believe in themselves and that they can achieve their dreams.
What’s your favourite brand?
Google. It’s simply the best in my opinion, and it’s the first place I go to when I need any information.
What’s your advice for young Emiratis?
If you see something that you aspire to or like or want to be, just tell yourself “I can”, because all it takes is the will to do it and the hard work. This country is full of opportunities and support to help you make your dreams come true.
