Timeframe: Land Rover celebrated in the Trucial States

This year, Land Rover celebrates its 70th birthday, and to coincide, a short film was recently released in tribute to the trusted off-roader's role in the early days of the Trucial States.

Two exponents of Land Rovers at the time were British chartered civil engineer Robin Webb, now 77, who came to Dubai in 1965, and Ras Al Khaimah resident Majed Mohammed Awwad, a Palestinian, who started working as an engineer in 1968.

Back then, there was little in the way of roads, as shown in this image from the late 1960s, with up to eight people travelling in one of the hardy 4x4s at any time.

“We basically lived in Land Rovers,” Webb recalls.

“The only car that could be used everywhere,” Awwad remembers. “Whoever owned a Land Rover was considered important.”
