Abu Dhabi tourism destinations snag 25 awards

Abu Dhabi scooped a host of top accolades at the World Travel Awards held as part of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) show in Dubai this week, underlining the high regard in which its blossoming tourism industry is held.

Travel agencies, the tourism authority, airlines, hotels and attractions were among the 17 businesses that won a total of 25 awards.

Yas Waterworld was named the Middle East's Leading Tourism Attraction, the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre was named the Middle East's Leading Convention Centre and the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) won in the categories of the Middle East's Leading Tourist Board and the Middle East's Leading Meetings and Conference Destination.

"This shows Abu Dhabi has some of the best attractions in the world," said Mubarak Al Nuaimi, the director of promotion and overseas offices at TCA Abu Dhabi.

Speaking on Monday, Mr Al Nuaimi said that the first day of the ATM had been "very busy".

"We have 86 participants [representing Abu Dhabi] compared to 64 last year with 52 booths. Each participant has about 20 meetings per day over four days so that's 1,700-something meetings. Hopefully by the end of the four days we will have agreements [with tour operators] in place."

Yas Island and the Sheikh Mansoor Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival had a presence at the ATM this year.

Other travel market awards went to the five-star Qasr Al Sarab for Leading Desert Resort and the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital won in the Middle East's Responsible Tourism Attraction category.

Tourism Development & Investment Company's Saadiyat Island and Saadiyat Beach were named the Middle East's Leading Tourism Development Projects. Jumeirah at Etihad Towers took multiple honours, including the Middle East's Leading Hotel.

Guide to intelligent investing
Investing success often hinges on discipline and perspective. As markets fluctuate, remember these guiding principles:
  • Stay invested: Time in the market, not timing the market, is critical to long-term gains.
  • Rational thinking: Breathe and avoid emotional decision-making; let logic and planning guide your actions.
  • Strategic patience: Understand why you’re investing and allow time for your strategies to unfold.

What drives subscription retailing?

Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.

The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.

The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.

The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.

UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.

That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.

Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
