National Bank of Abu Dhabi, the emirate's biggest bank by assets, said first-quarter profit fell 11 per cent due to more money being set aside for bad debt as well as lower gains from investments amid a slowing economy.
Net income fell to Dh1.27 billion in the three months ending March 31 compared to Dh1.42bn in the same period last year. Net impairment charges surged 73 per cent to Dh295 million versus Dh170m in the same period last year.
Net interest income, the money the bank gets from lending, rose 2.3 per cent year-on-year during the quarter to Dh1.83bn, while non-net interest income, the profit the bank makes from fees, fell 8.4 per cent to Dh819m during the same period.
“It’s a tough environment, no question but we believe the way we are approaching the marketplace is starting to show differentiation,” Alex Thursby, the chief executive, told reporters in a conference call after the results were published.
“If you continue with the old business model, that has been in the banking industry here, I think it is tough. From quarter four in 2015 to quarter one in 2016, certainly results we’ve seen so far, the industry is struggling.”
Since joining the bank in 2013, Mr Thursby has set out to move the bank away from relying solely on the traditional banking model of lending and taking deposits, to making more money from fees from services such as trade finance, syndicated loans and wealth management.
Mr Thursby said that despite the overall year-on-year drop in profitability, the bank had made strides in some of these areas, such as banking individuals.
As a result, year on year, the bank’s global retail and commercial business, which encompasses business from individuals, registered a 19.4 per cent first-quarter gain to Dh1.13bn.
