Money makes life easier to live for Viceroy hotels boss

Bill Walshe is chief executive of Viceroy Hotel Group. He previously represented Jumeirah Group. He is appearing in The Job, a reality show on CBS TV Network where candidates vie for a chance to get their dream job. He describes his financial journey so far.

What brought you to working with Viceroy?

As a career hotelier, I have worked with some of the finest independent luxury brands in the world. I joined Jumeirah Group in 2001 from Kempinski Hotels & Resorts, and lived in Dubai for six years. I then returned to my native Ireland to launch The Doyle Collection of modern luxury hotels as chief executive, and joined Viceroy Hotel Group in July last year based in Los Angeles as chief executive.

How would you describe your financial journey so far?

From a young age I have loved making my own money. I started in hotels working at weekends to make pocket money and put myself through college running a mobile disco operation. My financial journey so far has been about establishing a life for my family and now I am focusing more on creating a strong financial base for later years.

Are you a spender or a saver? Why?

More of a spender than a saver, although that is changing now. When spending, I acquire a few items - quality is more important than quantity to me.

What is your philosophy regarding money?

Money is not the meaning of life, but life is easier to live with money.

Did you make any financial mistakes along the way? If so, how did you recover?

I have a relatively conservative approach to investments, so have never been badly burnt. That said, I don't expect my house in Dublin to recover its value anytime soon.

Do you believe in planning for the future? Why?

Yes - I want to ensure that I can give my kids the best educational opportunities.

What is your idea of financial freedom?

Having the security of knowing that I can provide for the future combined with the ability to enjoy occasional financial spontaneity.

What do you enjoy spending money on?

My home - and right now I am kind of addicted to suits by the French brand The Kooples.
