Abdullatif al Sayegh, who brought MTV and Nickelodeon to the Gulf and built Arab Media Group (AMG) into one of the region's largest media companies, has resigned as chief executive of the company. Mohammed al Mulla, who joined AMG more than a year ago as its executive director after leading Dubai Media City for several years, was announced as the company's new chief executive in an internal memo last Thursday.
"I really think that this is the right decision for me," Mr al Sayegh said. "AMG is a baby that I built from scratch. TECOM (Investments, a subsidiary of Dubai Holding and parent of AMG) is a company I will respect for the rest of my life for giving me the opportunity to learn all that I have learned." Mr al Sayegh said he would be putting that knowledge to use in a new media consultancy that had already attracted several clients.
AMG grew rapidly under his leadership and at one point encompassed more than a dozen brands across television, radio, print, digital, outdoor advertising, printing and events. But last year, as media revenues fell around the country because of the economic downturn, Dubai began to consolidate its media assets under Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI), which had formerly held only a group of television stations.
