A photography competition by Dubai's MORE Café invites shutterbugs to submit four images that tell their story of the UAE, says Ujala Ali Khan MORE Café in Dubai has just launched its summer 2013 photography competition in collaboration with Gulf Photo Plus and Paul Macleod Photography. The contest gives UAE residents (ages 13 and above) the opportunity to share their work while getting a chance to win some really great prizes. “We are looking for creativity and originality in the winning images,” says MORE Café’s managing partner Wouter Lap, who will be shortlisting the final images, along with Mohammed Somji, the director of Gulf Photo Plus, and Paul McLeod, the owner of Paul McLeod Photography. The theme Lap says the theme “Your UAE story in Four Images” was chosen to represent what the UAE means to the people of various nationalities and backgrounds who live in the same country. “We wanted to see how many different ways the UAE can be represented in four simple but meaningful shots.” The organisers “We run a few competitions a year,” explains Lap. “The first MORE photography competition was held in June last year, and we had another competition in September. “The idea was to give amateur photographers in the UAE an opportunity to display their work in a gallery space and win great prizes. The response was excellent, so we decided to continue with it.” The cafe has received more than 300 entries for all its competitions to date, and expects another 100 entries for the current competition. “There are so many wonderful photo opportunities all around us. It is a matter of appreciating what is there and trying to capture it in the right light,” says Lap. How to participate To enter, simply upload your photos at www.gulfphotoplus.com/more and fill a form online. To qualify, a 150-word story must be submitted along with the four -images. The shortlisted entries will be part of an exhibition starting on October 23 at Gulf Photo Plus. From October 27, the images will be displayed at MORE Café at the Mall of the Emirates (MOE), where the public will be able to vote for their favourites. The winners will be chosen based on the number of votes, and the judges’s verdict will be announced in November. The winning images will be permanently displayed on the walls of the cafe in MOE. Lap concludes with a tip for photographers shooting in the summer heat: “Try to shoot early in the morning, or in the afternoon when the sun is slightly lower. Or get creative – shoot on water, indoors or at night.” artslife@thenational.ae Follow us Follow us on Facebook for discussions, entertainment, reviews, wellness and news.
