As part of the internship, Maya interacted with snakes, lizards, spiders, insects and scorpions.
She also handled tarantulas and Madagascar cockroaches.
From feeding insects to bathing bearded dragons, Maya took part in all the behind-the-scenes action at the institute.
Maya says she is most passionate about snakes.
Although she was not directly exposed to the venomous species, she did interact with and learn about them.
Maya says her favourite part of the intership was spending time with the snakes, including boas, pythons, beauty snakes, coral snakes and corn snakes.
She says she wants to change people's perception about snakes being evil.
'I don’t understand why people are afraid of them. As with any other wild animal, they do not attack humans or other animals out of evilness,' Maya says.
