The Dubai-based non-profit design association Tasmena marked its second anniversary on February 7 at Dubai's Jamjar Gallery, where supporters discussed the organisation's past accomplishments and future goals.
Tasmena is an interdisciplinary design organisation built around the premise that every member of the community can - and should - actively contribute to sustainable "city-making".
"Tasmena aims to develop place-specific design solutions for sustainable urban living, challenging the understanding of public space and the current state of urbanism," says the organisation's mission statement. It also aims to facilitate cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration among students, educators, professionals and members of the community.
In layman's terms, this means encouraging Dubai's inhabitants to engage with their city through workshops, competitions, exhibitions, forums and related events. Tasmena's most recent initiatives, Mena Lab 2011: Cutting Through the City and Mena Lab 2011: Discovering Al Quoz, included a series of discovery walks around specific parts of Dubai, followed by workshops that encouraged participants to reflect on their experiences.
Next up, Tasmena will explore Dubai's Al Khor. Discovery walks will take place today and March 3 and 10, and will be followed by a workshop on April 7. A subsequent Mena Lab walk and workshop will take place on the weekend of April 26. Tasmena will also re-run past walks to coincide with the upcoming Design Days Dubai and Art Dubai. Cutting Through the City, which starts at Downtown Dubai and ends in Jumeirah, will take place on March 19 from 4pm to 6.30pm, while Discovering Al Quoz will take place on March 22, from 4pm to 6.30pm.
