Dubai Bowling Centre is a fun option for escaping the heat. It has just reopened after an expansion and renovation, so we sent The National photographer Antonie Robertson for a look inside.
There are 16 professional-series lanes, which can be booked online, and those waiting their turn can pass the time watching black-and-white movies screened via projectors above the lanes.
In addition, there are areas where children and parents can challenge their fitness and stimulate their brains at the same time. The DBC Arcade offers the best in old-school games, as well as modern ones and virtual reality. The Zone offers hardcore gamers PS4s, as well as high-end computers, from which they can order in-house food. Jump Up is the trampoline playground – there are dodgeball, aerobics and basketball options, too, while Party Time can be booked for private celebrations, and Little Stars is where the toddlers can play while older family members bowl.

The in-house restaurant Yamu is named after the Japanese word for "yummy", and its menu and theme are inspired by gaming culture. Find quirky burgers served on colourful buns from a Japanese bakery, as well as popular "freak shakes", such as the Lotus Life and Cookie Monster.
