A fancy new beast has recently been unveiled by BMW in the form of the 2020 4 Series Coupe – and it’s been restyled in what can only be described as a dramatic way. The second-generation model has been given a proper reworking by the Bavarian motor company and, while it is still recognisable as being related to its predecessor, it now has a mad, toothy grille at the front, seemingly as wild as its 4x4 stablemate the X7. Car pundits have noted this high-spirited look was previewed in 2019 on the manufacturer’s Concept 4 vehicle, and it seems like this manner of styling could be a BMW thing from hereon in. It’s not only the outside that’s had an overhaul – the 4 Series has been given an upgrade in almost every way. This new version is bigger than its 3 Series sibling and a lot zippier, with improved aerodynamics, suspension and brakes. Buyers will be able to choose between a number of variants, including the 420i, the 430i, and the M440i xDrive, all with eight-speed automatic transmission. The first two both have two-litre, four-cylinder engines, the last is a three-litre, six-cylinder affair, but performance is significantly improved as you move up the pecking order. For example, the 420i will go from 0-100kph in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 240kph, but things get really hairy with the M440i as these figures go down to 4.5 seconds for the acceleration and up to 250kph when your foot is to the floor. A 10.25-inch control display, as well as a digital instrument cluster, are a feature, as are plenty of driver assists, including warnings for imminent collision and lane departure, as well as blind-spot detection and speed-limit information. The 2021 4 Series will arrive on UAE shores in October, but there’s no word yet on how much the various models will cost. Don’t expect any of them, least of all the M440i xDrive, to be a budget option, though.
