Have Dh1.1 million burning in your back pocket? Us neither, but if we did, we know what we would spend it on: the new McLaren 720S Spider, which is sliding under the year-end garage door as just about the best-looking car reveal of 2018. It's a sequence of events that has become fairly standard for McLaren, which usually sees the carmaker follow an initial launch of a coupe model with its convertible cousin, but the 720S is particularly notable to be receiving such treatment, as the British brand's top model. McLaren says it represents its "most accomplished convertible supercar ever" – and with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 720hp and 770Nm of torque, plus acceleration of 0-to-100kph in 2.9 seconds, it would be tricky to argue. That 0-to-100kph time equals the 720S Coupe, a niftiness aided by a weight gain of only 49 kilograms versus the Coupe. With the roof raised, it can hit 341kph; with it lowered, that figure is still 325kph. The retractable hard top can be lowered or raised in a sharp 11 seconds while the car is travelling at up to 50kph, and is available glazed with an electrochromic glass panel that can be switched between tinted and transparent. Deliveries of the 720S Spider will begin in March. __________________ Read more: Latest from The National's Motoring section __________________
