NIR YITZHAK, ISRAEL - MARCH 21: Areas around Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak remain desolate despite residents being told they can return on March 21, 2024 in Nir Yitzhak, Israel. On February 22, the IDF concluded that it was safe for residents in communities located more than 4 kilometers from the Gaza border could return. Residents responded to the government's position by countering that residents of neighboring kibbutz Sufa, less than a kilometer away, have not been advised to go back. Though some residents are eager to return, they are also concerned that until the IDF and Israeli government discuss a plan to invade Rafah, approximately 13 km away, it is not yet safe. IDF bombardments can still be heard and seen from the edges of the Kibbutz. (Photo by Alexi J. Rosenfeld/Getty Images)
