It is high time everyone prioritises recycling and makes a habit of it

With reference to The National's editorial Recycling is no longer optional, but necessary (January 28): It was a treat to read an article that so elaborately highlighted the concept of waste management. People must learn the importance of this.

Where there is rain there is likely to be the bother of mosquito bites

With regards to Gillian Duncan's report UAE residents being 'eaten alive' by surge in mosquitoes (January 27): we have them on Yas. I believe it's from lack of drainage on the sidewalk areas and broken watering hoses that create puddles.

Gus Kosta Bougadis, Abu Dhabi

In the Raha/Bandar areas, there are way more than I’ve ever seen. Went for a night walk and had to run home. I’m even afraid to keep windows open past sunset now.

Gianmaria Vidale, Abu Dhabi

In Al Qusais, my son had an allergy because of this and we thought it was something he ate.

Tiger balm is quite effective to keep them away. Also good to put on insect bites in general to make them heal quicker. Don’t know if there’s scientific proof for it, just according to personal experience.

The stories in this paper turned a reader into an entrepreneur

Being an avid reader of news from the business and fashion industries, articles about local business in The National inspired me. Asmaa Al Hameli's piece My UAE: the abaya couture of Fatima Al Mosa and her shop, Folak (July 3, 2014) encouraged me to start a business on my own and become a local designer who plays a role in global fashion.

Italy’s left has held on to its turf despite the best efforts of rivals

With reference to the report Italy's Salvini fails in bid to seize left's northern stronghold (January 27): Italy voted for right-wing parties by a large majority but finds itself ruled by the left without going through national elections for the fourth time in 10 years. It is a sick system ruled by a left-wing president.

A mansion with pool or not, there is no accounting for taste

With reference to Ian Oxborrow's report This Dh95 million Emirates Hills villa in Dubai comes with a steam room, grand piano and golf club views (January 27): for Dh95 mn it better come with the fountain of youth.

10 tips for entry-level job seekers
  • Have an up-to-date, professional LinkedIn profile. If you don’t have a LinkedIn account, set one up today. Avoid poor-quality profile pictures with distracting backgrounds. Include a professional summary and begin to grow your network.
  • Keep track of the job trends in your sector through the news. Apply for job alerts at your dream organisations and the types of jobs you want – LinkedIn uses AI to share similar relevant jobs based on your selections.
  • Double check that you’ve highlighted relevant skills on your resume and LinkedIn profile.
  • For most entry-level jobs, your resume will first be filtered by an applicant tracking system for keywords. Look closely at the description of the job you are applying for and mirror the language as much as possible (while being honest and accurate about your skills and experience).
  • Keep your CV professional and in a simple format – make sure you tailor your cover letter and application to the company and role.
  • Go online and look for details on job specifications for your target position. Make a list of skills required and set yourself some learning goals to tick off all the necessary skills one by one.
  • Don’t be afraid to reach outside your immediate friends and family to other acquaintances and let them know you are looking for new opportunities.
  • Make sure you’ve set your LinkedIn profile to signal that you are “open to opportunities”. Also be sure to use LinkedIn to search for people who are still actively hiring by searching for those that have the headline “I’m hiring” or “We’re hiring” in their profile.
  • Prepare for online interviews using mock interview tools. Even before landing interviews, it can be useful to start practising.
  • Be professional and patient. Always be professional with whoever you are interacting with throughout your search process, this will be remembered. You need to be patient, dedicated and not give up on your search. Candidates need to make sure they are following up appropriately for roles they have applied.

Electoral College Victory

Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.

Popular Vote Tally

The count is ongoing, but Trump currently leads with nearly 51 per cent of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.6 per cent. Trump has over 72.2 million votes, while Harris trails with approximately 67.4 million.
