US presidents cannot afford to ignore anti-gun protests

In reference to your story Stars turn out to support March for Our Lives (March 25), the people of the US have suffered enough from gun violence. While students protest in front of the White House, a gun culture which has been there for many decades still pervades. Whoever comes into the White House never bothers to tackle this gun culture, which is a huge menace to society and causes great tragedy.

Presidents talk about global terrorism and having allies worldwide but they don’t seem concerned about the safety of people on their very own doorstep.

The pictures of all the people marching were remarkable. It is high time the Trump administration took note of them, stepped up to the plate and dealt with this important issue before another tragedy happens. The safety of the innocent is all-important. Please Mr Trump, do not ignore the call of your people at this crucial time.

What is a life worth when someone has been assaulted and killed?

Regarding your story Gulf News editor Francis Matthew jailed for 10 years for killing wife in Dubai (March 25), this is not long enough, in my opinion. He should be in prison for life.

The fact he had taken a hammer and then hit his wife shows that he had time to think about killing her. This was not done in the same place where they were arguing.

What a terrible thing to do to a wife of many years. All marriages can come across certain issues but it is up to both to behave in a sane way.

Opposing sides of the water have different stories

In reference to your article After years of struggle, Bayonne Muslims will get a mosque (March 24), this is a suburb across the water from New York City. What isn't explained is that this is a living community for those who work in Manhattan. Some of the opponents to the mosque were people who work across the water from their homes and were unable to get home on that day.

It is unacceptable to blame all for the actions of the few but people in New Jersey have long memories. I am happy to see a peaceful solution.

The misery never truly ends for animals in cages

With reference to your video story The battle to retake Mosul saw much of the zoo destroyed and many of the animals were killed or taken by ISIL (March 22), it really hurts me to see those animals in tiny cages. Just because these extremist groups leave doesn't really mean there is any freedom for these creatures.

You are only truly free when you are not being kept in a cage or living in fear. You should not have to obey commands or be tamed.
